The solid 8.5" rugged tires and strong frame mean you can take this hoverboard over grass, dirt, or pavement with no problem. Best Cheap Option Jetson Spin

If you're dipping your toes into the hoverboard pool and don't want to empty your pockets in the process, the Jetson Spin offers the best value. It's not too fast or fancy, but just right for a fun, easy-going ride.

As one of the best cheap hoverboards, the Jetson Spin manages a modest 6.7 mph max speed, perfect for a leisurely spin around the house or the block. It has a pretty small range of 5.1 miles per charge, and the charging time isn't the best either, but it's all you need for those short, sweet rides.

The Spin is lightweight, making it ideal for kids and new riders. We also really like the side lights which are good for visibility in low-light situations.

Sure, it doesn't have the bells and whistles like Bluetooth speakers or long battery life, but it still promises hoverboard fun without breaking the bank.

Most Beginner-Friendly Gotrax Edge

So, you're thinking about getting into hoverboarding but feel a bit wary? Say hello to the Gotrax Edge, your perfect first hoverboard. I know getting onto a hoverboard for the first time can be daunting, but the Gotrax Edge promises to keep your first steps (or rolls, rather) safe and enjoyable.

One feature that really helps ease beginners into the experience is the self-balancing mode. This feature makes getting on and off the board a breeze, reducing the chances of those newbie tumbles. It's particularly reassuring if you’re nervous about keeping your balance.

Once you've got the hang of balancing on the board, you can expect a nice, beginner-friendly riding experience. The Gotrax Edge has a modest tested max speed of 5.9 MPH, so it's quick enough to be fun but not so fast that it becomes intimidating.

Then there are the LED-lit wheels. Not only do they look snazzy, especially at night, but they also add an element of safety by making you more visible. Sadly, there are no Bluetooth speakers here, but you wouldn't want that distraction while learning to hoverboard, right?

With a battery capacity of 50.4 Wh, we didn't expect a lot of range. In our tests, the Edge got 3.4 miles before shutting down. Performance is limited but it is an affordable segway into the hoverboard market.

One great feature that most other affordable hoverboards lack is the IP54 water and dust resistance. You can take this hoverboard out without worrying about a few raindrops or dusty paths.

Best Kids Terrain Pick Gyroor Y1S

For kids who want part in the off-roading fun, the Gyroor Y1S is an excellent option. The Y1S is the fourth hoverboard from Gyroor to make our list and it all boils down to its excellent build quality. It held up nicely to the wear and tear of more than a handful full-charge rides on challenging terrain.

Although not as powerful as the Y1 Pro, the 500W motors clocked a top speed of 7.2 MPH in our tests. This is pretty much the sweet spot for thrilling-seeking kids 9 years and up.

5.3 miles of tested mileage is plenty for most joy rides, but the board is slightly heavy relative to its overall performance. However, it is extremely well-built with a one-piece aluminum alloy frame and it felt as sturdy after a month of riding as on day one.

It boasts a plethora of smart features including well-sounding Bluetooth speakers, LED lights, a portable handle and smart app control. We love that you can change between kid and adult mode on the app as it allows you to get comfortable with the hoverboard before unleashing its full power.

Worthy Mention Hoverstar HS2.0

Second to last on our list is the Hoverstar HS2.0. Over the years, this is one of the best hoverboards under $100 we've tested.

It is comfortable to ride - the 6.5" solid tires are wide and have deep tread for solid grip on changing surfaces. We didn't expect a lot out of two 200W motors, but 5.4 MPH is decent for a quick recreatonal ride for the kids. With 4.2 miles of tested range, it still beats the Gotrax Edge which is similarly priced.

The Hoverstar HS2.0 is highly portable. It weighs just 12.5 lbs, but we found the weight capacity of 165 lbs to be limiting.

The 24V 4 battery is UL certified, but charging is a bit slower than we'd have wanted. Quite impressively, this board music speakers and the chrome design looks really sleek.

Coolest Feature Hover-1 Sypher

The Hover-1 Sypher is a truly unique in a market where every other hoverboard looks the same. If you're looking for a bit of wow-factor, the customizable LED display of this hoverboard has you covered.

We're quite impressed that the Sypher offers such a wide set of features at a price that anyone can handle. In our tests, the 300W hub motors delivered a top speed of 6.7 MPH, which is slightly above average and we got 5.4 miles of range on a single charge.

While the Sypher isn't the fastest hoverboard on the market, you still get a lot for your money in terms of performance and functionality. Bluetooth speakers, app control, three riding modes and the innovative LED display, to name a few.

This hoverboard is sturdy and well-built. There are no obvious weak points or flaws in its design and the structural integrity is on par with more premium models. It's fairly heavy at 16.2 lbs though, so kids may find it difficult to carry around. The load capacity of 220 lbs makes up for that as it can be ridden by both kids and adults.

If you're all about fancy features and customizations, the Sypher offers a lot of fun at a low price. The Bluetooth connectivity was a bit buggy at times and the audio quality of the speakers isn't the best, but at such a low price, it's impossible to fault.

Pro tip

If you're buying a hoverboard for a child, consider getting one with a higher weight limit to accommodate their growth. This way, they can still use their hoverboard for years to come!
