What we like

  • Safe LiFePO4 battery
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Dual riding modes
  • Decent top speed

What we don't like

  • Not ideal for rough terrain
  • Bluetooth draws battery fast

When we recommend hoverboards, especially for kids or new riders, safety is a top priority. That's why we love the Swagtron Swagboard Warrior XL with its LiFePO4 battery.

This 102.4 Wh battery isn't just safe; it lasts longer than regular lithium-ion batteries. You'll get more rides, more fun, and fewer worries about battery replacement. Plus, it's non-combustible and non-flammable, adding an extra layer of safety.

Besides its safe battery, the Warrior XL is still a great all-around hoverboard. You can go close to 8 MPH for nearly 6 miles. While it's not the fastest hoverboard on the market, it's still solid.

Of course, entertainment is not sacrificed here! You can connect your phone to the Bluetooth speakers to play music and even change how the hoverboard rides, from a beginner's level to something a bit more advanced as you gain experience. However, we did find that having it connected to your phone draws battery fast.

In short, I recommend the Swagtron Swagboard Warrior XL for both kids and adults who want a hoverboard that's fun and, most importantly, safe.

The Gyroor G13 is fairly lightweight and can support up to 176 lbs, which is great for teens going through growth spurts. Then there are the 6.5-inch pneumatic tires that make a world of difference in ride comfort.

What makes the G13 a real winner for kids is the fun features! Much like the other models on our list, this hoverboard features color LED headlights and Bluetooth speakers for the ultimate riding experience. And, with 5.5 miles of range, there's plenty of room for exploration.

If you crave a bit of adventure off the beaten path, then you're going to love the Gyroor Y1 Pro. It's the hoverboard equivalent of a rugged 4x4, perfectly geared for an all-terrain challenge.

What makes the Y1 Pro stand out? Power, and lots of it. With dual 350-watt motors, you've got an impressive 700 watts of power at your feet and a tested top speed of 9.7 MPH. This means when you encounter grassy hills, sandy beaches, or tempting dirt trails, the Y1 Pro doesn't just cope - it thrives.

This is largely thanks to its 8.5" solid tires with deep tread, it an ideal off-road hoverboard. While pneumatic tires might add comfort, the durability of solid tires makes them a better choice for rugged use.

Now, don't think this power is only for the pros. Thanks to its multiple riding modes, the Y1 Pro is designed so even beginners can jump on and start riding like they've been doing it for years. It's smart, user-friendly, and honestly, a blast to ride.

If there was a "luxury sedan" among hoverboards, it would be the Hover-1 Titan - a smooth-sailing, bump-absorbing dream. With its 10-inch pneumatic tires, it's built to glide over bumps and cracks that would have other hoverboards rattling your teeth.

Just like on smooth surfaces, you feel confident and comfortable across uneven terrain. Riding the Hover-1 Titan on grass or dirt feels almost as smooth as cruising on pavement - that's how comfortable the ride is!

Zooming around at a verified 7.8 MPH with a 6.4-mile range, the Titan is perfect for those leisurely rides where you're soaking in the sights, be it on a college campus or in your local park. It's not the fastest hoverboard out there, but it will get you from point A to point B in comfort.

What we don't like

  • Limited battery life
  • Bumpy ride
  • Not a lot of features
  • Slow charging

If you're dipping your toes into the hoverboard pool and don't want to empty your pockets in the process, the Jetson Spin offers the best value. It's not too fast or fancy, but just right for a fun, easy-going ride.

As one of the best cheap hoverboards, the Jetson Spin manages a modest 6.7 mph max speed, perfect for a leisurely spin around the house or the block. It has a pretty small range of 5.1 miles per charge, and the charging time isn't the best either, but it's all you need for those short, sweet rides.

The Spin is lightweight, making it ideal for kids and new riders. We also really like the side lights which are good for visibility in low-light situations.

Sure, it doesn't have the bells and whistles like Bluetooth speakers or long battery life, but it still promises hoverboard fun without breaking the bank.

  • Ultra lightweight

What we don't like

  • Poor performance
  • Weak motors
  • Bumpy ride

So, you're thinking about getting into hoverboarding but feel a bit wary? Say hello to the Gotrax Edge, your perfect first hoverboard. I know getting onto a hoverboard for the first time can be daunting, but the Gotrax Edge promises to keep your first steps (or rolls, rather) safe and enjoyable.

One feature that really helps ease beginners into the experience is the self-balancing mode. This feature makes getting on and off the board a breeze, reducing the chances of those newbie tumbles. It's particularly reassuring if you’re nervous about keeping your balance.

Once you've got the hang of balancing on the board, you can expect a nice, beginner-friendly riding experience. The Gotrax Edge has a modest tested max speed of 5.9 MPH, so it's quick enough to be fun but not so fast that it becomes intimidating.

Then there are the LED-lit wheels. Not only do they look snazzy, especially at night, but they also add an element of safety by making you more visible. Sadly, there are no Bluetooth speakers here, but you wouldn't want that distraction while learning to hoverboard, right?

With a battery capacity of 50.4 Wh, we didn't expect a lot of range. In our tests, the Edge got 3.4 miles before shutting down. Performance is limited but it is an affordable segway into the hoverboard market.

One great feature that most other affordable hoverboards lack is the IP54 water and dust resistance. You can take this hoverboard out without worrying about a few raindrops or dusty paths.

What we like

  • Versatile for different terrains
  • Suitable speed for kids
  • Dual riding modes

What we don't like

  • A bit pricey
  • Heavy relative to power

For kids who want part in the off-roading fun, the Gyroor Y1S is an excellent option. The Y1S is the fourth hoverboard from Gyroor to make our list and it all boils down to its excellent build quality. It held up nicely to the wear and tear of more than a handful full-charge rides on challenging terrain.

Although not as powerful as the Y1 Pro, the 500W motors clocked a top speed of 7.2 MPH in our tests. This is pretty much the sweet spot for thrilling-seeking kids 9 years and up.

5.3 miles of tested mileage is plenty for most joy rides, but the board is slightly heavy relative to its overall performance. However, it is extremely well-built with a one-piece aluminum alloy frame and it felt as sturdy after a month of riding as on day one.

It boasts a plethora of smart features including well-sounding Bluetooth speakers, LED lights, a portable handle and smart app control. We love that you can change between kid and adult mode on the app as it allows you to get comfortable with the hoverboard before unleashing its full power.

  • Extremely affordable
  • Ideal for kids and teens

What we don't like

  • Lackluster performance
  • Not ideal for long rides
  • Fairly low weight capacity

Second to last on our list is the Hoverstar HS2.0. Over the years, this is one of the best hoverboards under $100 we've tested.

It is comfortable to ride - the 6.5" solid tires are wide and have deep tread for solid grip on changing surfaces. We didn't expect a lot out of two 200W motors, but 5.4 MPH is decent for a quick recreatonal ride for the kids. With 4.2 miles of tested range, it still beats the Gotrax Edge which is similarly priced.

The Hoverstar HS2.0 is highly portable. It weighs just 12.5 lbs, but we found the weight capacity of 165 lbs to be limiting.

The 24V 4 battery is UL certified, but charging is a bit slower than we'd have wanted. Quite impressively, this board music speakers and the chrome design looks really sleek.

What we don't like

  • We had issues with Bluetooth connectivity
  • Bluetooth speakers aren't great

The Hover-1 Sypher is a truly unique in a market where every other hoverboard looks the same. If you're looking for a bit of wow-factor, the customizable LED display of this hoverboard has you covered.

We're quite impressed that the Sypher offers such a wide set of features at a price that anyone can handle. In our tests, the 300W hub motors delivered a top speed of 6.7 MPH, which is slightly above average and we got 5.4 miles of range on a single charge.

While the Sypher isn't the fastest hoverboard on the market, you still get a lot for your money in terms of performance and functionality. Bluetooth speakers, app control, three riding modes and the innovative LED display, to name a few.

This hoverboard is sturdy and well-built. There are no obvious weak points or flaws in its design and the structural integrity is on par with more premium models. It's fairly heavy at 16.2 lbs though, so kids may find it difficult to carry around. The load capacity of 220 lbs makes up for that as it can be ridden by both kids and adults.

If you're all about fancy features and customizations, the Sypher offers a lot of fun at a low price. The Bluetooth connectivity was a bit buggy at times and the audio quality of the speakers isn't the best, but at such a low price, it's impossible to fault.

Our Review Process

The 11 Best Hoverboards in 2024, Based on Real Tests (12)

We rigorously tested the market-leading hoverboards using racing-grade GPS gear, focusing on key aspects: speed, motor performance, battery life, durability, comfort, portability, features, and value.

Each model underwent at least 50 miles of testing to gauge long-term reliability, complemented by user feedback and verified reviews. Our selections highlight specific strengths like Best Overall, Budget Pick, and Best for Off-Roading, based on performance relative to price and manufacturer reputation. This approach ensures our recommendations are not only top-performing but also durable and trustworthy.

All our tests were conducted by a 175 lbs (79 kg) rider. This benchmark is important to consider: lighter riders may experience slightly better performance than our reported data suggests, while those heavier might find the hoverboard's performance marginally lower.

Considerations Before Buying a Hoverboard

You've explored some of the best hoverboards on the market, and now you're probably wondering which one is best for you or the lucky person you're buying for.

Sure, these reviews are super helpful in narrowing down your options, but knowing exactly what to look for makes all the difference. That's why we've put together a handy buyer's guide!

We'll lay out the key things to keep in mind while making your choice.

Safety Certifications

Let's talk safety first - because zipping around on a hoverboard should be fun, not a worry. Whether for a kid or an adult, a hoverboard's safety is something you can't overlook. Fancy features don't mean much if the board isn’t safe.

UL certifications allow you to ride confidently, knowing your hoverboard has passed stringent electrical and fire safety tests. The UL2271 certificate is specific to the battery, while UL2272 covers the hoverboard's electrical systems.

Always look for these certifications - they're your assurance that the hoverboard is up to the mark in safety standards.

Range & Battery Life

The last thing any excited rider wants to experience is their battery giving up before they've even started enjoying the ride. This is why you should check your chosen hoverboard's range and battery life.

A solid battery should strike a balance, charging within 1-3 hours and lasting about as long. Also, consider your hoverboard’s use - short fun rides or longer commutes. Remember that how far a hoverboard goes and its battery performance are influenced by rider weight, terrain, and weather conditions.

Speed & Motor Power

You'll find that hoverboards come in a range of speeds, and the right one for you depends on how fast you're comfortable going. While the average hoverboard cruises at around 5-7 mph, some can push to even 10 mph, which can feel speedy.

Remember, a speed that feels normal when walking can feel pretty fast on a hoverboard, especially for beginners or when you're riding over uneven terrain.

Generally, a higher motor power means greater speed. 500W motors are the standard, great for smooth rides and tackling a couple of bumps. The fastest hoverboards typically have anything above 500W, meaning you'll enjoy greater speed and smooth cruising over rougher terrain.

Wheel Size & Type

You'd be surprised by how much the hoverboard's wheels matter!

Smaller wheels (around 6.5 inches) are great for smooth, flat surfaces like indoor spaces and sidewalks. You'll get solid stability, especially as a beginner. But if you're looking to take your hoverboard on the roads less traveled, larger wheels (8.5 inches and 10 inches) are ideal.

You must also look at the wheel type - solid or pneumatic. Solid wheels are great for smooth surfaces and they're less prone to punctures. Pneumatic wheels are air-filled, so they can be more prone to punctures, but they offer much better traction and comfort for those more challenging terrain.

Weight Capacity

Hoverboards aren't one-size-fits-all. They're designed with a specific minimum and maximum weight limit. Choosing a hoverboard that can comfortably support your weight is essential for not only performance but also your safety.

Many hoverboards can handle up to 220 lbs, which works for most people. If you're lighter or heavier, you'll need to look for models that can carry your weight.

Pro tip

If you're buying a hoverboard for a child, consider getting one with a higher weight limit to accommodate their growth. This way, they can still use their hoverboard for years to come!

Build Quality

This may seem like a no-brainer, but the build quality of a hoverboard can make or break your riding experience. Whether it's for getting around or just for fun, don't overlook the materials and construction quality.

A good-looking, affordable hoverboard might be tempting, but it's the board's inner components and how they're put together that really counts.

If you can't check the build in person, dive into user reviews online - they're often the best indicator of the board's reliability. Pay attention to comments about the material's durability, battery, and overall performance. Aluminum alloy is always a safe bet for the frame.

Portability

The 11 Best Hoverboards in 2024, Based on Real Tests (13)

Hoverboards aren't all about gliding; sometimes, you've got to carry them. If you plan on taking your hoverboard with you on adventures, its weight is something to consider.

Most hoverboards weigh between 15 and 25 pounds. Heavier boards can be manageable for short distances, but it can be tiring lugging them around for longer walks or going up steep inclines where you might need to carry them.

Also, think about the terrain and whether you'll need to take a charger along. Those steep hills might mean you end up carrying your hoverboard more than riding it, so keep that in mind!

Price

The price tag of a hoverboard can tell you a lot. You don’t always have to choose the most expensive model to get the best quality. It's about finding that sweet spot where quality meets affordability.

The trick is to find a hoverboard that offers the features you need at a price that makes sense for you. Sometimes, it's worth paying a bit more for durability and better performance.

Remember that the cheapest option might save you money upfront but could cost more in the long run if it breaks.

Rider Type

Finally, you need to consider your own skill level or the experience of the person you're buying it for. After all, you don't want to buy a super fast, high-tech hoverboard for a complete newbie or an adult hoverboard for a child.

For younger and less experienced kids, look for hoverboards designed specifically for their age group. These usually cap their speed at a safe 5-7 mph, perfect for keeping things safe but still fun.

If you're shopping for an adult or teen, there are many more options available for those who want a bit more zip in their ride.

You also need to consider where the rider wants to go and if they're experienced. For example, off-road hoverboards can be an absolute blast but are best left to those with more experience.
