This recipe for Spam musubi onigiri is easy and can be made in less than 15 minutes. These Japanese-style rice balls are stuffed with delicious teriyaki spam — making them the ideal snack or quick meal.
What you’ll need to make Spam Musubi Onigiri:
- Spam
- White rice
- Soy sauce
- Rice wine vinegar
- Sugar
- Furikake seasoning: this is a Japanese rice seasoning made of dried seaweed, roasted sesame seeds, sugar, and salt.
How to make Spam Musubi Onigiri at home:
To make the filling:
Dice your spam in small bite-size cubes and transfer to a pan. Cook the spam, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and sugar on medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent any burning. Cook until the spam becomes crispy.
To form and shape the rice balls:
Place a sheet of plastic wrap on a flat surface. Place ½ cup of cooked rice on the center of the plastic wrap and slightly flatten the rice into a disk shape with your fingers or a spoon.
Place 1-2 tablespoons of the spam filling in the center of the rice and carefully form the rice into a ball, making sure to cover the spam filling. Use the plastic wrap to easily form the rice ball into a triangle shape.
Remove the plastic wrap from the triangle rice ball and dip the sides of the rice ball in furikake seasoning.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I did!

Ingredients
- ¼ can of SPAM®
- 1½ cup white rice, cooked
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- ¼ cup furikake seasoning
Instructions
To make the filling:
- Dice your spam in small bite-size cubes and transfer to a pan. Cook the spam, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and sugar on medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent any burning. Cook until the spam becomes crispy.
To form + shape the rice balls:
- Place a sheet of plastic wrap on a flat surface. Place ½ cup of cooked rice on the center of the plastic wrap and slightly flatten the rice into a disk shape with your fingers or a spoon.
- Place 1-2 tablespoons of the spam filling in the center of the rice and carefully form the rice into a ball, making sure to cover the spam filling. Use the plastic wrap to easily form the rice ball into a triangle shape.
- Remove the plastic wrap from the triangle rice ball and dip the sides of the rice ball in furikake seasoning.
Notes
- Wet your fingers in some water before handling the rice, this helps the rice from sticking to your hands when shaping the rice balls.
- You can optionally mix in the furikake seasoning with the rice before shaping the rice balls.
- I don't recommend making these rice balls ahead of time. The rice hardens over time and doesn't taste as good as eating them fresh.
